The Gulf and especially the wrecks just off Marathon are extremely fun to fish. No matter what type of fish you’re looking to catch, whether it be food fish, or sportfish, big or small, you can catch them out in the Gulf.
It is a great place to fish with the whole family, regardless of your skill level. Smaller hard fighting fish that you can catch one after another will keep the kids very busy as well as filling the cooler. But when you want to step up to the plate and go out for a big boy that’ll test your strength, there’s no better easier place to do it.
Lots of Fish to Target in the Gulf
Fish species range from mangrove snapper, Grouper, Cobia, African pompano, king fish, blue runners, Jack Crevalle, Mackerel, Goliath grouper, and sharks, to barracuda. All of these fish can easily be targeted in a days fishing charter.
Wrecks & Manmade Habitats in the Gulf
Most of the spots that we fish here off of Marathon Florida are wrecks. Most of them were intentionally put there to create a fish habitat. Over the years they have been lying under the water growing corals and attracting more and more fish.
It has actually created a healthy atmosphere for more than just Fish. Almost every wreck you pull up to your undoubtably going to see other marine life like turtles.
There is no doubt that when you are close to these wrecks. Even before you get to put chum in the water, a lot of baitfish usually start swarming around the boat. This is a sight to be seen if you’ve never seen it before.
Wreck fishing is as close to shooting fish in a barrel as you can get.
Fish in Almost Any Weather
Another big bonus about fishing the gulf wrecks is it is generally calmer in the gulf on windier days. Even if the winds are blowing 20 to 25 mph out of the east which is our predominate wind you can usually expect no more than a 2 foot sea to fish in which is very comfortable.
That is definitely a big advantage that the Florida Keys have over the rest of the state of Florida and anywhere else – we can choose to fish the Atlantic ocean or the gulf of Mexico.
That’s another great reason why fishing in Marathon Florida is great because it gives you more chances to fish.
